Story Time with the Rav

Rabbi Irving Bunim got up at one of the Agudah conventions and pointed out a contradiction. The Gemara (Sota Daf Lamed Vuv) says, that when Moshe told everyone he was going to split the Yam Suf, everyone was fighting over who gets to jump in first. Later on, however, it says that what happened was that Nachshon was the only one who jumped in, and everyone else waited until it was safe.

His answer was that both versions actually happened, however, they took place at different times. The first version about what happened during Krias Yam Suf, was at the meeting the night before. The second version is what actually happened L’meisah, (go vomit in your mouth if you don’t like that I used that word). Nachshon was the only one who actually went through with it, and then everyone else jumped in after him.

People are constantly whining how “The system has to change”. “The Rabbanim need to start pressuring people to make less expensive weddings.” “Someone HAS to do something about the shidduch system.”

When people say this, what they are really saying is, “I want to go about shidduchim a certain way, however, I don’t have the guts to be different, so I want everyone else to go first, that way, when I do it, I fit into society because everyone else is already doing it.”

Here’s the reality of life. Nothing ever changes unless someone sticks their neck out on the line. That’s why they call it “sticking your neck out”, because sometimes the guillotine comes down on you.

The best advice I can give you ( if you’re down bad where you’re taking life advice from me, no offense, but this should be your wakeup call), if you find yourself in this type of predicament, and you really want something different, go find people who think like you. (That’s different from people who agree with you on everything. You’re in a cult if that’s the case. Or a religion. Calm down, I’m not comparing the two. It’s just a joke.) As hard as something like this may be, there is no magic third option where you get to change everyone around you, then you live happily ever after.

Remember your shitty ex? Remember how much they suck and never changed? Now times that by hundreds of thousands of people. I rest my case. Good night.
